Warning: This note may contain spoilers for episode 1 of the series What If…?
This Wednesday, August 11, the animated series What If…? Premiered on Disney Plus, which puts a twist on the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) by reimagining events from the movies in unexpected ways. The first episode, with her name, sums up what it shows: What if Captain Carter were the first avenger?
Instead of Steve Rogers, it is Peggy Carter who becomes the first super-soldier. In the opening episode, Heinz Kruger (Richard Armitage) sets off a bomb, shoots Colonel Chester Phillips (Tommy Lee Jones), and steals a vial of the Super-Soldier serum. Steve, still like the skinny boy from Brooklyn, confronts Kruger, but Kruger shot him and left him badly injured. Carter defeats Kruger, retrieves the serum, and takes Steve’s place in the transformation chamber, driven by Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper).
But despite the fact that it is Peggy who becomes a superhero, Steve Rogers does not lose prominence in the chapter, having an important role. He is the wearer of a mechanical suit similar to Tony Stark’s Mark I, but created by Howard Stark, called the Hydra Stomper.
There are many references to the film Captain America: The First Avenger, with the twist that What If…? Steve Rogers is still the skinny guy, but he fights Peggy on the battlefields of Europe as the Hydra Stomper, and the two share several intimate moments that confirm that Rogers and Carter really were soul mates. The only thing this Steve is missing is the voice of Chris Evans. Who plays the original Cap and why isn’t Evans?
Steve Rogers’ voice in What If…? It’s Josh Keaton’s
He’s probably not as well known as Chris Evans, but the reality is that the voice of Steve Rogers from What If…? is Josh Keaton, a voice actor who has participated in productions such as the animated versions of Ant-Man and Spider-Man.
Isn’t Evans here because his time in the MCU has come to an end? In an interview with Uproxx, director Bryan Andrews spoke about the absence of iconic actors like Steve Rogers.
“All of these people are extremely talented and have a lot going on. And we thought we probably couldn’t get them all, just because programming is so difficult.Andrews explained.
More than a final goodbye, the director excuses Rogers’ absence for reasons of time. Recently, Dave Bautista said that no one from Marvel Studios asked him to voice Drax in What If… ?, which raised suspicions about the absences of actors such as Rogers, Scarlett Johansson, among others.
Yes indeed. The director of What If…? He was very careful when choosing the voice actors, so that the characters would sound credible or acceptable. Keaton did it with Steve Rogers.
