Ryder Cup, the USA take off: 6-2 against Europe

In the first 4 games of the morning only the Spaniards Rahm and Garcia resist the game of the Americans. Disappointment for Poulter and McIlroy. And also the afternoon smiles on the US with another 2 victories

The first spectators showed up at the gates of Whistlins Straits at four in the morning. At seven the stands were packed. The beginning of the 43rd edition of the Ryder Cup did not betray the expectations, especially for the Americans who immediately took the lead at the end of the first 4 matches in the morning: 3-1. And at the end of the day the score became: 6-2.

The first tee time at 7.05 of the Spanish couple Rahm / Garcia against Spieth / Thomas, the two Americans who know each other, compete and date since adolescence. The course is beautiful and in perfect condition, designed by Pete Dye inspired by Scottish links. It is on the coast of Lake Michigan, so large it looks like a sea. A treacherous and trapped path with more than 900 bunkers ….

The Foursomes of the morning

We start with the four Foursomes, each pair plays with a single ball alternating in shots.

Rahm/Garcia (Eur) battono Spieth/Thomas (Usa) 3&1

It starts at 7.05 am in the midst of the boos of the American public. And the first shot of Sergio Garcia with the sun still low on the horizon and does not promise anything good: immediately an error, the ball goes into the bunker. Justin Thomas responds with a perfect shot instead, in the middle of the fairway. In the end it will be par for both pairs. In the second hole Garcia still puts Rahm in difficulty who misses the approach from a very difficult position and so the Americans take the lead. But at that point the Spanish duo wakes up, especially with Rahm starting to post from every position, even from twenty meters away. A decisive tear that leads the two Spaniards to turn to nine with two holes of advantage, which become three to 10. The alchemy between the two Spaniards works perfectly, defending the advantage until the end. It closes at 17: 3 & 1, the first point to Europe.

Johnson / Morikawa (Usa) beat Casey / Hovland (Eur) 3 & 2

Much less well in the others. The second game ends 3 & 2 for the Americans. It is an interesting swing of advantages and overtaking, but when the American couple takes off there is nothing more to be done. The Americans win the first hole, the Europeans draw on the third and take the lead on the fourth. At the 8 mega mistake with Johnson’s drive, but the Americans manage to recover even for a millimeter error by Hovland on the putt that overflows by a breath At nine the same happens to Casey who does not pocket at all and the Americans turn with a hole of advantage. Morikawa has an impressive quality and that makes all the difference until the end.

Koepka / Berger (Usa) beat Westwood / Fitzpatrick (Eur) 2 & 1

The English Lee Westwood at 48 and at the eleventh appearance in the Ryder Cup shows his usual class with irons, but as often happened to him he is not relentless with the putt, so the Americans take home this point too. At the beginning Fitzpatrick is in a bit of difficulty, perhaps because of the emotion, and the two Englishmen are not satisfied with the attempt to reach in the middle of the game.

Cantlay/Schauffele (Usa) battono McIlroy/Poulter (Eur) 5&3

It is the real big surprise of the day, unfortunately in the negative. What was supposed to be one of the best pairs for Europe, with Ian Poulter usually running wild in Ryder, immediately sinks losing the first five holes. Above all the fault of an imprecise and lightly loaded McIlroy. The final recovery is useless, at least as a level of play. It ends with an embarrassing play: seven holes lost and only 2 won.

The Fourballs in the afternoon

In the American afternoon, the Italian night, the Fourballs were played, each player has his ball and the best score of the two is chosen:

After Hovland, Casey christens another Ryder rookie, the Austrian Wiesberger. That does not play badly, but even in this case there is too much difference in quality with the American couple. Especially at the beginning Schauffele is incredible with the putt and Dustin Johnson, now that he has improved even in the short game, does what he wants. It ends badly for Europe.

The “Mad Scientist”, as Dechambeau is called, is capable of destroying a par 5 with a 375 meter drive. And if he is also fit with the putt it is difficult to stop him. Hatton and Rahm offer a show and keep the match in balance even if the Englishman misses a few putts too many. It is the most intense and exciting confrontation of the second part of the day. And in fact it ends in a draw.

Not even in the afternoon McIlroy seems very inspired and goes a bit in the wake of Shane Lowry, making his debut in Ryder. But he too dies soon. There is no equilibrium, the two surrender to the American couple who collect birdies above all thanks to Tony Finau who plays like a precision machine. For Rory a Friday to forget.

Hovland is one of the nice surprises of this Ryder. Play both in the morning and in the afternoon. It is up to him to keep Fleetwood “company” who lost his twin Molinari with whom he had won 4 points in Paris. The two play well and are comfortable. Too bad that there is no victory but only a draw.
