Ten minutes of applause at the San Carlo Theater for “I Fratelli De Filippo”: Rubini’s film enchants the audience

Ten minutes of open stage applause. Dedicated to the director Sergio Rubini and the 1200 actors of the cast which sees among the protagonists Mario Autore, Domenico Pinelli, Anna Ferraioli Ravel, Biagio Izzo, Susy Del Giudice, Giancarlo Giannini, Marisa Laurito. The San Carlo Theater in Naples allows itself to be conquered (and even moved) for the preview screening of the film “The De Filippo brothers”, or the story of the beginnings and family vicissitudes of those who would later become three “giants” of Italian theater and international: Eduardo, Peppino and Titina De Filippo. «Admired», Maria Elisabetta Alberti Casellati, president of the Senate defines herself. “Honored to be Neapolitan”, are the words of Roberto Fico, Speaker of the Chamber. While the mayor Gaetano Manfredi focuses on the “lesson that comes out of it: that of a people that with tenacity and dignity never gives up, and that will know how to shine again this time”.

A film that the producer Agostino Saccà, from the stage where in 1945 for the first time “Naples millionaire” was staged, does not hesitate to define “a big movie”. Which certainly does not hide ambitions of planetary consecration. There are 1200 actors (“no extras, they are all real actors”), the 48 days of film shooting in Naples dominated by the second wave of Covid, the cost of costumes strictly as in the first decades of the twentieth century (“35 thousand only for stage shoes », Saccà laughs). But the final result of the film supported by Pepito Produzioni, Nuovo Teatro, Rs Productions and Rai Cinema is worth it. and how.
“Perhaps nobody knows the three young De Filippo brothers – says Mario Autore, who had to play Eduardo -. There are no real documents, except a few photos: and this was a good thing, because we had a certain freedom in representing these characters, in resembling their personality but at the same time moving away from them. Just think of Eduardo’s stature … ».

Sergio Rubini is the most moved: «A meticulous and respectful work of talent, with the constant presence of Naples in the narrative. The De Filippo family represent an important piece of the history of Italy. It is the story of a family wound that turns into art ».
With an Anna Farraioli Ravel in the role of Titina, the great protagonist who comes out in every step, especially the stormy ones, of the life that the three De Filippo lead in the shadow of the Scarpetta family. The father hides himself in the shoes of “uncle” Eduardo Scarpetta, the most famous, rich and acclaimed actor and playwright of his time. Scarpetta does not recognize the three natural children he had with the beautiful Luisa De Filippo but I introduced them to the world of theater since childhood. On the death of the great actor, the legitimate children share the inheritance, while Titina, Eduardo and Peppino are entitled to nothing. To the three young men, however, “uncle” Scarpetta passed on a special gift, his great talent, which, on the other hand, did not touch his legitimate son Vincenzo, also an actor and playwright. “Titina has a great love for her brothers, she is the authentic glue of the trio that is dreamed of, opposed, annihilated but then triumphs – says Anna Ferraioli Ravel – first with the comedy” sik Sik “and then with one of the milestones of Eduardo’s writing and interpretation: “Christmas in the Cupiello house” ».
The film ends precisely at this point. With the three young De Filippo who join forces and give life to a completely new way of telling reality with a look that reaches up to the future. It is the birth in Neorealism.

“The De Filippo brothers” must be seen at the cinema on 13, 14 and 15 December. Also to be reflected in the art of knowing how to laugh even at one’s own miseries but always rising up. Indeed, by innovating. As it still happens today to Italy that wants to turn the page after the pandemic.
