Al Teatro alla Scala in Milan great success for the Premiere in front of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella. The inauguration of the season kicks off with the most anticipated event of the year. The classic curtain of 7 December opened with Giuseppe Verdi’s Macbeth. The direction is by maestro Riccardo Chailly, directed by Davide Livermore (in its fourth “first”). A very long final applause highlighted the great success of the first: applause and standing ovation for all the protagonists of the Scala opera. Enthusiasm skyrockets, flowers thrown towards the stage. Trto the many thunderous applause for the cast of Macbeth, when the director appeared on the stage Davide Livermore from the audience there were also “buuu”. A sign that its contemporary staging has not found the unanimous consent that singers and orchestra have instead received.

The unbeaten record of applause at La Scala goes to “Armide” by Christoph Willibald Gluck conducted by Riccardo Muti under the direction of Pier Luigi Pizzi, staged on 7 December 1996. The performance of the opera by the eighteenth-century German composer won 20 minutes of applause, which thus still holds the first place in the Scaligero applausometer. In second place “Tosca” by Giacomo Puccini, conducted by maestro Riccardo Chailly and directed by Davide Livermore, which opened the 2019/20 season, winning 16 minutes of final applause.

Chailly, at its eighth season inauguration, closes with Macbeth the “youth trilogy” begun in 2015 with Giovanna d’Arco (libretto by Temistocle Solera da Schiller, world premiere at La Scala in 1845) starring Anna Netrebko and Francesco Meli, continued in 2018 with Attila (libretto by Temistocle Solera by Zacharias Werner then revised by Piave, world premiere at the Teatro La Fenice in 1846) directed by Davide Livermore and Ildar Abdrazakov in the eponymous role. “Macbeth is without doubt the best of the three works,” says Chailly. Almost three hours of melodrama in four acts, on a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave and Andrea Maffei from: the version is that of 1865 which, as explained by maestro Riccardo Chailly “is the second version, written by Verdi for the staging in Paris of 1865, sung in French, and given for the first time in Italian at La Scala in 1874 ”, with the critical edition by David Lawton published for Ricordi in 2005 with many small differences compared to the previous printed edition. Compared to the 1865 edition, there is the inclusion of Macbeth’s death, with a modulation that is very reminiscent of the beginning of the third Act with Othello’s solo violas.
