PEN Film Revives the Film Industry Amid the Covid-19 Pandemic : Okezone Celebrity

JAKARTA – The entertainment industry, especially the film industry, has also been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, the government through the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) launched the National Economic Recovery (PEN) program in the film sector or called PEN Film.

The PEN Film program is considered to be able to restore the economy in the country’s film industry, which had been in suspended animation during the Covid-19 pandemic. This was stated by a short film producer from Malang, Arfan Adhi Perdana, whose work was selected to be funded by PEN Film.

As film actors, Arfan and his team are happy because the program can help him work again in the midst of a pandemic. Through this assistance, Arfan and his team are currently working on a short film entitled ‘Jangka Kala’.

“Yesterday, the film industry was said to have been suspended for two years, during the pandemic. We are not only engaged in the short film industry, but also of course for those who work on feature films and cinemas,” said Arfan when contacted by MNC Portal, Sunday (12/5/2021).

“I think those of us who have received this assistance finally feel we can be recovered and like we are trying to get back up (in the midst of this pandemic),” he said.

He explained that the short film project Term Kala itself was not the first time he had worked on during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, this is the first time he has received assistance from the government to produce his short film.

“This is the first time we have received support from the government through assistance, and we are the only ones from Malang Raya who have received this,” said Arfan.

He hopes that this program can continue to advance the film industry in the country. “Hopefully this kind of assistance can become a regular program and every year, so that other friends can also be helped to revive their economy. Not only for film workers, but also for the film ecosystem,” he said.

For information, the film Term Kala produced by Arfan is one of the selected works to receive the Government Assistance for Indonesian Film Production in the Short Film category from PEN Film.

Term Kala tells the story of a pair of lower-level fishermen who are waiting for their baby. This fishing couple believes in the myths about turtle eggs which are believed to be able to keep the wife’s womb. However, the pair then faced regulations for turtle conservation and climate change in their area.

Raising about myths and the environment in Malang, the production process of the short film Jangka Kala took shooting locations in several tourist destinations in Malang, East Java. Among them are Clungup Beach, Tiga Warna Beach, Kondang Buntung boat pier, and Sendang Biru fish port.
