Cinema in Piazza meets contemporary art. Friday 23 July at 9.15 pm in the Cervelletta park in Rome, the review curated by the Piccolo America Association hosts the European premiere of Paper & Glue (2021, 94 min), a documentary by the French photographer JR just presented in world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival 2021 The exclusive screening will be presented by the artist / director JR himself and director Mathieu Kassovitz. The meeting will be moderated by the journalist Cecilia Sala.
JR, included by TIME magazine among the 100 most influential people in the world in 2018 and who recently reinterpreted the façade of Palazzo Strozzi in Florence with the site-specific work La Ferita, which addresses the issue of accessibility to cultural sites of the time of Covid-19, has always had the artistic intention to give a global voice to ordinary people through a genre combination of public art, photography and large-format entertainment. His huge portraits of ordinary people in unexpected places, scattered in the streets all over the world, are capable of questioning the viewer, seeking an encounter between the subject depicted and passer-by. “Paper & Glue” transports the viewer into the extraordinary world of the artist, on a journey that starts from the first videos of illicit graffiti captured at night on the rooftops of Paris, passing through the works created on the border between the United States and Mexico, to the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, up to an ongoing collaboration with a California maximum security prison.
Mathieu Kassovitz will also be a guest of Il Cinema in Piazza also the following evening, Saturday 24 July in the suggestive park of Monte Ciocci, to present one of his favorite films, “I soliti ignoti”, the masterpiece by Mario Monicelli nominated for an Oscar in 1959 as Best foreign film.
