McAvoy Debunks Prof X In Doctor Strange 2 Rumors By Comparing To Garfield

James McAvoy offers a definitive response to the rumors that his iteration of Professor X will appear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

James McAvoy offers a definitive response to the rumors that his iteration of Professor X will appear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The upcoming installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will find Benedict Cumberbatch’s titular sorcerer continuing his research into the Time Stone though accidentally unleashes an unspeakable evil while attempting to deal with a friend-turned-enemy. Alongside Cumberbatch, the cast for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will see the returns of Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Benedict Wong as Wong, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo while introducing Xochitl Gomez to the MCU as America Chavez.

Development on the Doctor Strange sequel has seen a somewhat rocky road since getting underway in late 2018 when director and co-writer Scott Derrickson officially signed on to return with Cumberbatch. He would eventually step down in January 2020 with co-writer C. Robert Cargill due to creative differences and Sam Raimi was brought on board to direct with Loki creator Michael Waldron set to pen the script from scratch with Raimi’s vision. After multiple delays in production due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, filming finally concluded in September following reshoots and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is slated to hit theaters in March.

In a recent exclusive interview with Screen Rant, McAvoy addressed recent rumors that his version of Professor X will turn up in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The star definitively debunked his appearance in the film and compared the situation to Andrew Garfield’s recent ongoing debunking of his making an appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home. See what McAvoy said below:

“Got nothing to say on that. [Press continually asking about Marvel rumors are] just doing it because the actor has to say no, and we’re used to the actor saying no, and then they do show up. But I’m saying no and I mean it.”

Over a decade into its run and Marvel Studios continues to be a powerhouse studio for both its celebrated projects as much as the secrecy surrounding them and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is certainly one of the most buzzed-about and speculated on by fans. Given the film’s title and narrative connections to Loki, WandaVision and fellow highly discussed title Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans have continued to put their own hopes and theories of returning actors from non-MCU properties into the ether and the X-Men are certainly high on that list next to Tobey Maguire and Garfield’s webslingers. The conversation has only heated up further surrounding the mutant team following Kevin Feige’s announcement in 2019 that an X-Men film was in the works for the MCU alongside Deadpool 3, despite his noting the former will be a different take than Fox’s hit franchise.

McAvoy’s debunking of Professor X appearing in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness may come as a disappointment to some fans, but the reality is it’s a sensible one for Marvel and the MCU. One of the biggest fan theories surrounding WandaVision was the arrival of Reed Richards or another member of the Fantastic Four, yet despite a film being in the works for the team, the studio held back from dropping the first seeds too soon for their arrival. Additionally, with Evan Peters already having appeared in the Disney+ series for a bait-and-switch Quicksilver, the studio is unlikely to cross the streams this soon into their acquisition of the previously Fox-owned properties. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to hit theaters on March 25, 2022.
