Things are looking very busy on the Star Wars front these days. Live-action shows Ahsoka, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, The Mandalorian Season 3, and The Book of Boba Fett are all heading to Disney+, while Star Wars: Visions, Star Wars: The Bad Batch Season 2, and LEGO Star Wars Terrifying Tales will be joining the more animated side of the faraway galaxy.
As for video games, take your pick. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, VR experience Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge – The Last Call, an open-world Star Wars game temporarily titled The Star Wars Project, and a remake of Knights of the Old Republic, are just a few major titles hitting consoles.
But what about Star Wars in film? Have we forgotten how we discovered the faraway galaxy in the first place? It’s fair to say that Star Wars is a bit like James Bond, in that even when we’re all gone, they’ll still be making new movies! And though things may seem quiet on the film side of things now, there’s actually a lot going on behind the scenes. But how many more Star Wars movies will there be?
Well, there’s no way of telling how many more Star Wars movies there will be between now and the end of time, but we do have an idea as to how many are currently in the works. And with 11 movies in existence – 12 if you count Star Wars: The Clone Wars (or 13 if you include the last four episodes of the show, a movie in their own right) – it’s no surprise that there’s more than one installment on the table.
So join us as we enter hyperspace and see what the Galactic Empire – er, we mean Disney – has under construction.
Kevin Feige Star Wars movie
Marvel President Kevin Feige might seem like he already has his hands full with the MCU, but he’s also working on his very own Star Wars movie. But what’s it about? Well, unfortunately, we have no idea, but we do know what it isn’t about – and that’s Han Solo, which Feige recently confirmed by way of debunking rumors. However, is it possible that, given his experience with the MCU, the film will focus on a powerful Jedi or someone who discovers they’re connected to the Force? After all, the Jedi are the superheroes of the Star Wars universe, and Feige is no stranger to such beings.
We also know is that Kathleen Kennedy will be working alongside Feige on the project, but as for anything in the way of a plot, cast, release date, or even a title, your guess is as good as ours. Feige has been pretty vague and evasive about the film, which he proved in a recent interview with Collider, during which he offered nothing besides the fact that Han Solo won’t be appearing in the film. For now, though, it will be fun to guess what he might be up to. Either way, it seems that all the upcoming Star Wars movie projects will be completely independent of one another – which can’t be a bad thing.
Taika Waititi Star Wars movie
Taika Waititi is no stranger to Star Wars – not only did he play hunter droid IG-11 in The Mandalorian, but he also directed the Season One finale “Chapter 8: Redemption”. So it won’t come as much of a surprise to learn that the director will also be helming his own movie set in the faraway galaxy. Exactly what it will be about is unknown at this stage, but knowing Waititi, he has something fresh and funs up his sleeve, especially if Thor: Ragnarok is anything to go by. The threequel was, in many ways, a reboot of the Thor series, without actually disregarding past events (though mocking them all the same).
In a recent interview with WIRED, the director, best known for What We Do in the Shadows (in which he also stars), did shed some light on the upcoming project, when asked about the new script. “It’s still in the ‘EXT. SPACE’ stage” he joked, before confirming, “But we’ve got a story. I’m really excited by it because it feels very me.” Perhaps Waititi’s comic touch is just what Star Wars needs. And if we’re going to be getting a lot more than just one isolated movie, why not experiment a little? After all, playing around with genres hasn’t hurt the MCU – you only need to look at Thor: Ragnarok to know this.
New Star Wars trilogy
This might come as a bit of surprise, although rumors of a fourth Star Wars trilogy have been circulating since the hugely divisive film by Rian Johnson, The Last Jedi. Back then, it was announced that Johnson was to be entrusted with his own trilogy, a separate series of films that would have nothing to do with The Skywalker Saga. But with fans more than a little unhappy with such an idea, it’s difficult to know where the land now lies with Johnson’s project, and we highly doubt Disney and Lucasfilm will risk another trilogy facing such scathing criticism, like the widely-hated sequel trilogy.
With that said, perhaps Johnson’s trilogy is already underway, as there’s a lot of conflicting information about this floating around. Nevertheless, Lucasfilm is indeed rumored to be developing a new trilogy that will take place after the sequel trilogy. It’s said that the trilogy would be headlined by Kylo Ren, which makes no sense considering he died in The Rise of Skywalker. Perhaps Disney and Lucasfilm should instead focus on ‘correcting’ the existing sequel trilogy first, whether it’s through a complete retconning, a reboot, or even opening up the Star Wars multiverse (which does technically exist).
Rogue Squadron movie
This upcoming Star Wars movie is easily the one with the most fuel in its tank (pun absolutely intended). Not only do we already have a title, unlike the other Star Wars projects, we’ve also had a teaser from director Patty Jenkins, who is best known for Wonder Woman. While it’s not your average teaser, we do get a sense of the director’s inspiration. Jenkins tells us she “grew up as the daughter of a great fighter pilot” and would often see her father and their squadron taking off in their F4s, describing it as the most “thrilling thing” she’s seen in her entire life.
Determined to fulfill her lifelong dream of making the “greatest fighter pilot movie of all time”, Jenkins searched a long time to find the “right story”, before finally finding a script about two things she loves. Before the teaser ends, she dons orange overalls and a starfighter helmet, before hitting the tarmac and making for her fighter. Jenkins has also revealed that it was her father’s passing while in service that ignited her desire to channel her emotions into a “one great film”.
StarWars.com has also revealed the official synopsis for the film: The story will introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy. While this is all great news for Star Wars fans, on the other hand, it seems that Disney and Lucasfilm have learned very little when it comes to churning out new movies. 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story didn’t quite meet box office expectations, which was likely due to ‘Star Wars fatigue’ – after all, between 2015 and the release of Solo, there had been three Star Wars movies in theaters: The Force Awakens, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and The Last Jedi.
Now, the same appears to be happening with Star Wars TV shows. Following the success of The Mandalorian, Disney, and Lucasfilm jumped at the chance of launching a number of live-action projects into production, which may end up causing similar problems. Either way, we have no right to complain about Star Wars these days, as we’re getting far more than we asked for. Let’s just hope the Force is strong in the upcoming movies.
Rogue Squadron will fly into theaters on December 22, 2023.
